I have been doing my Black Heroes of Mathematics talk since 2017. Over the years there have been 20 minute versions, 30 minute versions and the full hour. I done posters and two different musical videos. Some argue that it is one of my best talks but my boyz say the Mathematics of the Black Panther will always be their favourite!
Last Tuesday I had the pleasure of doing a virtual talk for the The International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS). First thing first, the ICMS team consisting of Paul Glendinning, Dawn Wasley and Belle Taylor were second to none. I could work with them all year round!
In terms of the presentation itself, it went very well. Though not my intention it has in the past reduce the audience to tears. It has been talked about being a very inspirational mathematics talk.
The talk itself is posted here
This has receive very positive comments from viewers from Africa, United States, South America as well the UK to name a few.
The President of the London Mathematical Society said this
“I watched your lecture and thought it was really wonderful, interesting and deeply moving.”
An American Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health posted this on twitter
“Thought provoking and moving – you should find/take time to watch this talk “The Black Heroes of Mathematics” by Dr. Nira Chamberlain
. He was recommended to become a boxer because he was black! But… “You don’t need anybody’s permission to be a great mathematician”
I am still going through the 15 pages of comments and questions as this will give me ideas on how to change the presentation for the future.
But in the mean time this version will remain frozen until next year.
My next time to present this is in October during Black History Month to the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine!!
In the meantime I will keep on selling the narrative that mathematics is for everybody!
